# Obtain API Credentials

To obtain your API credentials, you must first set up a developer portal account following the steps in [Developer Portal Account](/get-started/developer-portal-account). Only users with developer portal accounts can create API keys.

> **Warn**
>
> You must have a developer portal account before you can generate API credentials. If you haven't set one up yet, see [Developer Portal Account](/get-started/developer-portal-account) and [Logging in to the Developer Portal](/get-started/logging-in).

## Creating an application

To obtain your API credentials (**Consumer Key** and **Consumer Secret**), create an application in the Plex Developer Portal.

#### Access the Developer Portal

Navigate to the [Plex Developer Portal](https://developers.plex.com/) and log in with your credentials.

#### Navigate to My Apps

Click on your **account name** in the top-right corner and select **My Apps**.

#### Add a new application

Click **Add a New App**.

#### Name your application

On the Add App screen, enter a **name** for your application.

#### Select API products

For **Product** (also known as API categories), select the API products you want access to.

#### Create the application

Click **Create App**.

#### Retrieve your credentials

The **Consumer Key** and **Consumer Secret** are generated for your application and will appear on the screen.

> **Warn**
>
> Store your **Consumer Secret** in a secure location. You will need both the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret to authenticate your API requests. Do not share these credentials publicly or commit them to source control.

## Next steps

With your credentials in hand, learn about the [Request Headers](/get-started/request-headers) required for making API calls.
